How long will my airbrush spray tan last?

Clients always ask us “how long will my airbrush spray tan last?” so lets take a minute to talk about it. We always tell our clients that your spray tan will last between 7 and 10 days, but some clients can get their spray tan to last longer. How do they do that? With our tanning tips! These tips are some things that you can do before you tan to prep your skin, as well as some things you can do after to extend the life of your tan.

Let's talk about prepping your skin for the spray tan, the first thing you want to do is wax. If you do wax you will want to do this about 2 days prior to your airbrush spray tan treatment. The reason for this is that left over wax residue will block the absorption of our Infinity Sun spray tanning solution. It's also important to note is that you will not want to wax after you tan because you will actually wax the spray tan off. If you shave you will want to do this the night before the appointment, not the day of. This is because shave gels and lotions can leave residue on the skin which will prevent the airbrush tan from sticking. The next and most important thing you can do to prep is to exfoliate your skin. Most people don’t know that humans are actually like snakes, we shed our skin every 28 days. So when you exfoliate your skin you are getting rid of the dead and dying skin that is ready to fall off any ways, that way the tanning solution will adhere to your soft, fresh, new skin. We recommend a dry brush or exfoliating mitt on dry skin. Again exfoliating products can leave a film on the skin's surface which could prevent the spray tanning solution from adhering.

Put on LOOSE dark clothing immediately following your spray tanning session. Remember that the color you are seeing is just the spray tanning bronzer and it takes about four hours for the solution to absorb into your skin. If you put on something tight, like a bra, it will rub the spray tanning solution off of your skin before it has a chance to absorb. It might actually look like you wore that bra while you were tanning. Also, please don’t wash your hands for at least 2 hours. This is important because if you get wet or get any splash marks it will wash away the solution and you will be left with what ever water spots you see. Finally, please don’t put on any lotion until after you take your fist shower and wash off all the bronzer in the spray tanning solution.

To prolong the life of your tan we recommend that you wait at least 10 hours before you take your first shower, preferably the next day. If you do decide to sleep on your spray tan remember that the bronzer has a tendency to rub off; lay some old sheets out on your bed so it doesn’t get on your nice ones, If the bronzer does rub off it will come out very easily in the wash. Whenever you decide to take your first shower remember that you will see some color running off and going into the drain. DO NOT PANIC as this is just the bronzer in the spray tanning solution and is completely normal. When you do shower remember that the solution is sugar based and when sugar gets warm it melts, so do not take long hot showers, quick and cool. After your shower pat yourself dry with a towel, do not rub. Then apply a generous amount of lotion. The best advice we can give you is to put on as much lotion as you possibly can. we recommend or Infinity Sun Extender. The more hydrated your skin is, the longer your airbrush tan will last.

Mobile Spray Tans - New York

There is a reason the saying "tan fat looks better than white fat," is so popular. My thighs definitely look thinner when tan. Some go the extreme of the "the darker the better" but the fact is that the majority of us look and feel better with a healthy glow. Other than having a slimming effect, an airbrush tan can help hide skin conditions, varicose veins and tan lines. Excessive UV exposure can lead to skin cancer and premature aging, so how does one achieve a healthy tan? Fake it or better yet, let us help you fake it with a mobile spray tan in the privacy of your home. Now THIS is the ultimate way to hide that cellulite!

Mobile Airbrush Tans Manhattan

At Bake Spray Tanning we do most of our airbrush tanning in our studio on 29th  street in Manhattan, but sometimes we wonder why more clients don’t have us come to them? I can’t think of a quicker and more private experience than an at home spray tan in New York! Summer is here and you know you’re about to leave for the Hamptons with your girlfriends. I know you guys have a wedding next month. Why not get a group of girls together and have a mobile airbrush tanning party? I thought I would take a minute to explain exactly what a spray tan party is.

A Bake Spray Tanning artist comes to your house about 15 minutes before your guests arrive and sets up an airbrush tanning tent.  This can be done in the most open area of the home-- bathroom, kitchen or outside on a deck-- basically anywhere that is a large enough area and has a electrical outlet. Each custom spray tan takes about 5 minutes from start to finish and you can invite anywhere from 5-20 of your friends.  At home spray tanning in New York is something that we do for bachelorette parties, galas and we’ve even paired the mobile spray tans with jewelry events! There is no mess involved with our mobile airbrush tanning services and you can dry in the comfort of your home. No struggling into your skinny jeans or schlepping on the New York subway!

Anything Goes- In Skin that is...

3/8/2013 - Bake Spray Tanning

According to a recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, tanning salons are observing an increase in Indian and African American women coming in to get spray tans, particularly on their legs. And yes, these requests are on the rise at Bake too! The procedure is a good, snag-free alternative to panty hose, because it evens the skin tone, hides flaws like scars and stretch marks, and gives off a golden-bronze look. We like to refer to this as the "golden stocking" effect. At Bake Spray Tanning, we don't necessarily take you darker, we just match the skin tone and give it a beautiful sheen.

Celebrities like Beyonce, Gabrielle Union,  Kerry Washington and Rhianna have  already adopted this trend. Yes, we advertise ourselves as the "go to" spray tan for your pasty pals, but anything goes and works. Just you see.

Tanning Tips for the discerning (and very skeptical) Bride

2/8/2013 - Bake Spray Tanning

Wedding season is fast approaching and at Bake we're busy gearing up for the influx of brides and bridesmaids who grace our tent this time of year. Want to spray tan for your wedding without looking like a carrot walking down the aisle? Well you've come to the right place.

Many of our brides at Bake have never tried spray tanning, and their number one fear is obviously looking orange--followed closely by fear #2. Will the spray tan run off on my white dress? When applied properly and with these pre and post spray tanning tips you can prevent the orange and achieve that sun-kissed look you crave without the harmful effects of the sun.

I have sprayed many a bride for her big day. In fact, bridal sprays are our specialty. Our Infinity Sun solution evens out the skin tone and adds the perfect touch of color -- just enough to take a bride out of her winter slump and into the gorgeous glow that she needs. Not to mention that her photos will look incredible!

Here are  a few spray tanning tips + trade secrets exclusively for our brides- to- be.

1. Shave.

The day before your spray tan session yields the best results.

2. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate.

Exfoliate 24-48 hours prior with a sea-salt scrub (or other body exfoliating scrub). This removes loose, dead skin cells, which prevent the application of color. Exfoliating will improve and extend your tanning results.

3. Skip the oils, gels, lotions and perfumes.

Prior to tanning, your skin should be clean and dry with no product residue.  All makeup should also be removed before your spray tan session and don't forget to take off your jewelry! You definitely don't want a white necklace line with your strapless dress!

4. Tan in dark undergarments.

Bring dark, loose fitting clothing to wear after your tan (no skinny jeans or stretch pants). At bedtime, wear an oversized T- shirt (I steal my hubby's) and loose pants

5. Avoid bathing + workouts for 24 hours.

Avoid hitting the shower, pool, or other source of water for 8-12 hours (18-24 hours preferred). You can wash your hands lightly but avoid showers or work outs. I also recommend using shower gel or body wash instead of bar soap (and do not exfoliate or use a shower puff – hands only).

Also, avoid any products that contain alcohol, alpha hydroxy acid, retin-a, beta hydroxy and any other peeling agents. You should moisturize twice daily with a basic product-- nothing with perfumes or mineral oil

6. Trial Run

I always suggest a practice session about a month prior to an event. This way, we can perfect the look we are going for before the big day. Do you want to go darker? Would you rather a lighter sun- kissed effect?  Either way, you be glowing all the way to the honeymoon suite!

From Feeling Down to Being Brown. How it All Works

Bake Spray Tanning

If you've ever seen a sliced apple turn from white to brown, you've seen how spray tanning products work on your skin.

Natural chemicals cause the inside of the apple to turn brown when it's exposed to air. The naturally occurring  dihydroxyacetone, commonly known as DHA, does the same thing to your skin. DHA is the main ingredient in sunless tanning sprays. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation warns against using any sunless tanning product that does not list DHA as the active ingredient.

DHA is a colorless sugar derived from plants such as sugar beets. It has been used to treat medical problems such as skin-pigmentation disorders for more than 50 years. It's also been approved by the U.S. FDA for cosmetic use for decades. It was first used in a tanning product by Coppertone in the 1960s, although that early attempt tended to turn people orange. DHA products have been significantly improved since then, partly because the refining process is better.

DHA has an enzymatic reaction with the outer layer, or epidermis, of the skin, causing the dead skin cells to turn temporarily dark. By contrast, the sun's rays and the UV lights used in tanning beds penetrate into the deepest layers of skin. That's why they cause lasting damage.

Just as it takes the apple a while to turn brown, so can it take several hours for the DHA to darken your skin. That's one reason our top of the line spray tanning solution includes a temporary dye or bronzing agent. Our clients want to see immediate results and we understand why! Unlike the darkening caused by DHA, the dye will wash off the first time you shower -- or "run" when you sweat. Another common ingredient in spray-tanning products today is erythrulose, also a natural sugar, which gets some credit for the more natural (not orange) color of newer spray tanning products. Our solution also contains botanicals, moisturizers and aloe vera to help the skin absorb the tanning solution quickly and avoid excessive dryness.

Happy bronzing!
